During these busy summer months, many college admissions offices are busy multi-tasking — working to maintain their incoming class from the inevitable summer melt, recruiting to make goal for their incoming class, preparing for orientations, and/or establishing relationships with sophomores and juniors beginning their college search. These are all vital roles of an admissions office and require the ability to multi-task. Not only are admissions officers working with students at different stages of the enrollment funnel, they are also multitasking with phone calls, emails, Facebook, instant messaging and campus visitors.
Younger workers may have strong multi-tasking skills, but is this a good thing? Multi-taking can be stressful and inefficient. We’ve all heard these basic tips on how to better manage your work, so consider these friendly reminders.
1. Touch your email messages only once.
2. Check your email on a schedule – two to three times a day.
3. Create a to-do list.
4. Prioritize your to-dos for the next day before you leave the office.
5. Schedule time for the big projects and “turn off†any distractions such as phone or email.
Remember, time management will help you avoid stress and feel more in control. After all, wouldn’t we all like to avoid a little stress and be more efficient?
